1. Cedar Hill Masonic Lodge
2. Cedar Hill Chamber of Commerce
CALL FOR ARTISTS | Masonic Lodge Building at Pioneer Park
Release Date: November 13, 2023
About the Project: The Cedar Hill Masonic Lodge, in partnership with the City of Cedar Hill, is seeking artist qualifications for a mural project on the north side of their building in Historic Downtown Cedar Hill. The mural wall surface is approximately 53 feet by 24.5 feet with a painted plaster surface. This wall faces Pioneer Park, the heart of Historic Downtown Cedar Hill and many community events and programs.
Pioneer Park is also the primary home to a set of 5 feet tall “Cedar Hill” letters (depicted in the photo below) that are set in front of the Masonic Lodge wall. While the letters are movable, the City’s intent is to display them at this location most of the time. The mural concept for this location should consider the placement of these letters and not have any critical elements depicted in the bottom five feet of the mural. The mural must also incorporate the Mason Lodge logo.
The artwork for this project must be culturally and socially appropriate for the community of Cedar Hill and sufficiently durable to withstand the elements of the Texas climate as well as interactions with the public. The successful artist must prime the wall and apply graffiti protection coat upon completion.
Theme: Proposals should reflect one or more of the following themes:
- Welcome to Cedar Hill
- Native Wildlife and Habitat
- Cedar Hill natural areas and landscapes
- Cedar Hill culture, history and/or landmarks
Budget: The project budget is up to $30,000 and is inclusive of all costs associated with the timely completion of the mural, included but not limited to design, materials, labor, rentals, travel, per diem expenses, insurance, and contingency funds. The artist will be paid an allowance for materials upon signing a contract and the remainder upon completion of the mural.
Eligibility: Any Texas-based artist or collection of artists with demonstrated experience in large-format artwork may apply.
Application Requirements: Applicants must submit the following information through the online application by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, December 15:
- Contact Information
- CV or resume
- 3-5 images of recent work
- Statement of interest that includes: the reason the artist is pursuing this opportunity, why the artist or group of artists is the best candidate, a brief overview of the artist(s)’s experience in large-format artwork, and a description of the artist(s)’s idea for the mural design.
- 2 references
- Sketch(s): a proposed sketch of a possible design for the mural.
Selection Process: A selection committee will select up to three finalists and pay each $300 to create a site-specific proposal that includes a scaled color rendering, budget, and installation timeline. Finalists are required to participate in an in-person site visit before submitting a final proposal.
One finalist will be selected to enter a contract with the Masonic Lodge and complete the mural.
